Demo-itis, a form of conditioning found in music, our lives and businesses.

Demo-itis, a term often used in music production, describes the phenomenon of becoming attached to a flawed demo version of a song. The more you listen to it, the more you grow fond of it.

I argue that demo-itis is a form of conditioning that extends beyond music production and can affect various aspects of our lives and businesses.
In some cases, demo-itis can lead to success if the initial demo or conditioning proves effective. Clive Davis shares a notable example involving Whitney Houston's iconic song "I Will Always Love You," illustrating how attachment to a demo can result in a successful outcome.
However, demo-itis can also become detrimental when it reinforces patterns of failure. In such instances, breaking free from this conditioning and reversing course may seem challenging.
If you find yourself caught in the cycle of demo-itis or trapped in a pattern of losses, here's what I suggest:
Take a step back: When caught in the grips of demo-itis or stuck in a cycle of failure, it's crucial to pause and gain perspective. Stepping back allows you to distance yourself from the immediate situation, providing clarity and the opportunity to reassess your approach. By taking this moment to reflect, you can break free from the tunnel vision of demo-itis and explore alternative paths forward.

Think about the big picture: Consider the overarching goals and objectives you aim to achieve. Reflect on how the current situation aligns with these goals and whether any adjustments are necessary to stay on track. By focusing on the big picture, you can prioritize actions that lead to long-term success rather than getting bogged down by temporary setbacks or attachments to flawed demos. This strategic approach enables you to maintain perspective and make decisions that contribute to your ultimate vision.
Elevate piece by piece: Break down the challenges or conditioning into manageable components and tackle them incrementally. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task ahead, focus on making small improvements or adjustments one step at a time. This methodical approach allows for gradual progress and builds momentum toward overcoming demo-itis or breaking free from patterns of failure. By elevating aspects of your life or business piece by piece, you can navigate obstacles with confidence and ultimately achieve your desired outcomes.
