Why Quitting Is Your Biggest Strength

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers!

How was my weekend? I’m glad you asked. I spent the weekend celebrating my wife and mother while battling my 3-year-old daughter’s fever on Friday and Saturday. We also squeezed in some celebration for my dad, whose birthday is today.

I had an epiphany this week. In the heat of celebrations and plans that needed to pivot because of unforeseen sickness, it dawned on me in a conversation on Saturday night that I needed to “call it.”

That moment when you have to just pull the rip cord on a situation and let chips fall where they may. Quit and be okay with it. If you’re anything like me, you must also resist the urge to overcommit by making a “rain check” appointment or plan to overcompensate for the guilt.

This realization reminds me of Steven Bartlett’s Quitting Framework.

In leadership and entrepreneurship culture, we often celebrate beginnings, but Steven Bartlett challenges this notion. He suggests that true success often involves knowing when to walk away.

For leaders, the power of quitting and confronting the uncertainty that comes with it, whether it's in a job, relationship, hobby, your hometown, or anything you’ve been weighing in the balance, might be something we need to tap into more often.

For me, I can hear so clearly from the Lord when I embrace these moments of abandon. Probably because most of the stuff I’m carrying is of my own choosing and inconsequential to eternity.

In the clarity of an uncluttered schedule, worship helps bring me back to center. I want to share this worship moment with you. It really blessed me. May this song help you jumpstart your week, refilled by the presence of the One who has come to give you life and that more abundantly:

Matt Redman - Better Is One Day/ Facedown (Live)

One of my favorite songwriters of all time is Matt Redman. He’s written some of my favorite Christian/Gospel worship songs, including the ever-timeless “Heart of Worship,” the international anthem “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord),” and other top songs like “Blessed Be Your Name.”

The following medley of “Better Is One Day” and “Facedown” is from Redman’s forthcoming Coming Back to the Heart live collection record.
